Welcome to English with Ruby & Max.
Easy English, one conversation at a time.
I’m Ruby.
Hi, everyone.
I’m Max.
I’m happy you’re here with us.
Today, we’re talking about mistakes and how mistakes can help us learn.
This topic is perfect for me.
I make mistakes every day.
That is normal, Max.
In fact, a mistake can be a useful part of learning.
This week, I made a mistake in a short message to a friend.
I wanted to say, "I am bored," but I wrote, "I am boring."
Oh, I understand.
Those two sentences have different meanings.
Yes.
My friend thought I meant that I was a boring person.
I felt a little embarrassed.
What did you do?
I wrote, "Sorry, I made a mistake.
I am bored."
Then my friend understood, and we both smiled.
That is a great example.
You made a mistake, you fixed it, and you kept talking.
I did not stop using English.
That part was important.
Today, we have four simple ideas to help you feel better about mistakes.
We will learn how to notice a mistake, try again, and keep speaking.
We will also learn some easy phrases you can use when you do not understand or when you want to fix your words.
Before we begin, please like this video and subscribe to the channel.
You can also find free lessons and practice at www.nativas.app.
Great.
Now let’s talk about mistakes without feeling afraid.
Yes.
A mistake is not a wall.
It can be a small step.
The first idea is simple: "Mistakes are normal."
Even for people who speak English very well?
Yes.
People make mistakes in every language.
Sometimes we choose the wrong word, forget a word, or say a sentence in a strange way.
So a mistake does not mean, "I am bad at English."
Right.
It means, "I am learning English."
Let me try that.
"I am learning English, so mistakes are normal."
Very good.
You can also say, "I am still learning."
"I am still learning."
I like that sentence.
It is a kind sentence for yourself.
You do not need perfect English to have a real conversation.
But I sometimes feel nervous when I speak.
Many learners feel nervous.
Try to speak one short sentence first.
Like, "I like coffee."
Exactly.
Then you can add one more sentence: "I like coffee.
I drink it in the morning."
If the sentence is not perfect, I can still share my idea.
Yes.
Communication is more important than perfect grammar.
So the first idea is, "Mistakes are normal," and "I am still learning."
Keep those two phrases.
They can help you feel calm.
The second idea is to notice a mistake and fix it.
How can I fix a mistake while I am speaking?
You can stop for a moment and say, "Sorry, let me try again."
"Sorry, let me try again."
That sounds friendly.
It is friendly and clear.
You can then say the sentence again.
Let me try a small scene.
I say, "Yesterday, I go to the park."
Good.
Now notice the mistake.
"Sorry, let me try again.
Yesterday, I went to the park."
Nice job.
You did not need a long explanation.
I just fixed the sentence and continued.
Yes.
Another useful phrase is, "I made a mistake."
"I made a mistake.
Let me try again."
That is a strong sentence.
It shows that you are calm and ready to continue.
What if I do not know the correct sentence?
You can say, "I am not sure.
Can I try that again?"
"I am not sure.
Can I try that again?"
Exactly.
A pause is okay.
You do not have to answer very fast.
I think I need to remember that.
A pause is not a failure.
Right.
A pause gives your brain time to find the words.
Sometimes my mistake is not the problem.
Sometimes I do not understand another person.
That is very common.
Asking for help is also part of learning.
What can I say when someone speaks too fast?
You can say, "Please speak slowly."
"Please speak slowly."
That is easy.
You can also say, "Can you say that again, please?"
"Can you say that again, please?"
Yes.
The word "again" tells the person that you want to hear the words one more time.
Let’s act it out.
You are speaking fast, and I do not understand.
The bus leaves at eight, so we need to—.
"Sorry, can you say that again, please?"
The bus leaves at eight.
I understand now.
"Thank you."
Perfect.
You can also ask about one word.
Say, "What does that word mean?"
"What does that word mean?"
Yes.
Many people are happy to explain a word.
I can say, "Please speak slowly," "Can you say that again, please?"
and "What does that word mean?"
These phrases help you stay in the conversation instead of becoming quiet.
Now let’s connect mistakes with practice.
Practice does not need to be long or difficult.
I sometimes think I need one free hour to practice English.
You do not.
Five minutes can help.
Choose one small task.
What is one small task?
You can describe your breakfast.
Say, "I had toast and fruit."
Then I can add, "I drank water."
Good.
You can say the sentences out loud two or three times.
What if I make a mistake each time?
Notice it, fix it, and try again.
That is practice.
I can practice this conversation, too.
Yes.
On nativas.app, you can practice this English and other languages.
Tap a word or phrase to translate it, hear it, and check your pronunciation, free 20 times a day with a free account.
That sounds helpful.
I can hear a phrase, say it, and try again.
Exactly.
Try a phrase like, "I am still learning."
"I am still learning."
I can say it slowly first.
Then say it at a normal speed.
Small practice can make a big difference.
So I do not need to wait for a perfect day.
Right.
You can take one small step today.
I understand that mistakes are normal, but how do I learn from one?
Ask yourself one simple question: "What can I learn from this?"
That question changes the feeling.
It sounds curious, not angry.
Yes.
Look at the mistake and find one useful point.
With my message, I learned the difference between "bored" and "boring."
Good.
"I am bored" describes your feeling.
"I am boring" describes the kind of person you think you are.
So I can say, "The movie is boring, but I am bored."
Exactly.
That is a clear example.
I can make a mistake with a new word, too.
Of course.
Write the word down, check the meaning, and use it in a new sentence.
Then I can say the new sentence again later.
Yes.
A mistake can show you what to practice next.
I like that.
The mistake gives me a small plan.
That is a great way to see it.
Instead of saying, "I am terrible," I can say, "I know what to practice."
Very good.
You can also say, "I learned something today."
"I learned something today."
I will use that after a mistake.
And remember, learning from a mistake is more important than hiding it.
The last idea is to keep going after a mistake.
That is the hardest part for me.
I want to stop speaking.
When you want to stop, take a breath and use a kind sentence.
"It is okay to make mistakes."
Yes.
Then say, "I can try again."
"It is okay to make mistakes.
I can try again."
Those words can help you return to the conversation.
Let’s imagine I am ordering food.
I say the wrong word.
You can say, "Sorry, I made a mistake.
I mean tea, not coffee."
Then the other person knows what I want.
Right.
You solved the problem with simple English.
I do not need a perfect sentence to continue.
No.
You only need enough English to share your meaning.
What if someone laughs at my mistake?
You can stay calm and say, "I am still learning."
And then I can try again.
Yes.
One mistake does not decide your future.
I may make ten mistakes and still learn ten things.
That is a wonderful way to think.
Keep speaking, keep listening, and keep trying.
"Keep trying."
I want to remember that phrase, too.
First, "Mistakes are normal," and "I am still learning."
Second, notice a mistake, say, "Let me try again," and continue.
Third, ask for help with, "Please speak slowly" or "Can you say that again, please?"
Fourth, practice in small steps, even for five minutes.
Fifth, ask, "What can I learn from this?"
and use the answer.
Sixth, keep going with, "It is okay to make mistakes.
I can try again."
"Small mistakes can open the door to better English."
In the next 24 hours, make one short voice recording in English.
Talk about your morning, your food, or your plans.
If you make a mistake, say, "Let me try again," and continue.
Then listen one time and notice one thing you did well.
That is your small practice for today.
You do not need to make a perfect recording.
You only need to take one small step.
Max, your story at the beginning has a happy ending.
You made a mistake, fixed it, and kept talking to your friend.
Yes.
Now I know that "I am bored" and "I am boring" are different, and I am still learning.
What about you?
What small English mistake helped you learn something?
