A discreet review rarely says, “This statement is careless.” Instead, it lets syntax carry the criticism. One might have expected a distinction between evidence and assertion, particularly when the speaker presents a tentative forecast as settled fact. Not that the statement was entirely without merit: its central concern was legitimate, but the supporting reasoning amounted to little more than a sequence of confident assurances. Under the circumstances, the ambition was understandable; the certainty was not.
